「她是真正的女政治家，我們這邊没有。」中國重量級作家章詒和說。她認為「蔡英文雖敗猶榮。看了，大慟！」。
2012年台灣總統大選，中國國民黨提名的現任總統馬英九和民主進步黨主席蔡英文對決，馬英九以近80萬票的差距擊敗蔡英文，連任成功。台灣各界可能最著重在誰輸誰贏的結果，但中國各界看到的最鮮明焦點，卻是蔡英文，一位華人世界女性政治新星。一位署名「中性群眾」的網民說：「她是第一个普选参选行政领导人的中华民族女性，已经创造历史。」
台灣這一次的總統大選，備受國際以及大陸矚目。中國的官方傳媒封殺選戰過程，沒有夠份量的主流媒體平衡報導，但猶如螞蟻雄兵的年輕一代網民串聯，在網路湧現同情蔡英文和台灣反對陣營的聲浪，和「官方說法」形成有趣的對比。這一股聲浪，在蔡英文敗選演說後達到高潮。
